Elon Musk's social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), experienced significant outages on Monday, which Musk attributed to a "massive cyberattack." Users began reporting issues around 5:30 AM ET, with problems persisting throughout the day. According to Downdetector, reports of outages peaked at over 40,000, with 56% related to the X app and 33% to the website.
Musk stated that while X faces daily attacks, this particular incident involved substantial resources, suggesting involvement from a large, coordinated group or possibly a nation. He noted that IP addresses linked to the attack originated from the Ukraine area.
These disruptions coincide with challenges in Musk's other ventures. Tesla has seen a decline in European sales and has been the target of protests in the U.S., actions Musk attributes to progressive groups and rival billionaires. Additionally, Musk's role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), established by President Donald Trump to reduce public spending, has been met with controversy and criticism.
The outages on X are among the most significant since Musk's acquisition of Twitter in 2022, after which he implemented substantial staff reductions. Despite expectations of technical issues due to these cuts, the platform had remained relatively stable until this incident.
